ITM Helps Miami University Students Succeed @ SAE BAJA

A 400âpound offâroad vehicle is suspended 7 feet from the floor inside the highâbay area of Miami Universityâs engineering building. In a split second, with the pull of a release pin, the rugged race car â loaded with an additional 150 pounds to simulate a driver â will free fall to the concrete. It is yet another day of severe testing for MUâs RedHawk Racing Team, a crew of about a dozen college students at the Ohio school, who are preparing for the Baja SAE Collegiate Design Series.
Riding along for the test is a crucial piece of portable hardware, a CompactDAQ unit on loan from Integrated Test & Measurement (ITM), a National Instruments Gold Alliance Partner from Milford, Ohio. Upon impact, ITMâs batteryâpowered cDAQâ44 acquires load data from strain gauges affixed to the carâs frame and instantly sends a wireless transmission to a nearby laptop. The students and advisors huddled around the computer react as they watch the signal yield an immediate spike within ITMâs iTestSystem software (iTS). For the budding engineers, it is an exciting moment as their vehicle design just transitioned from one based on simple trial and error to one informed by actual test data.
âI canât thank ITM enough for making this tool and application available to us,â said Patrick Gallagher, a senior engineering student at Miami. âOur new frame design is going to hold up so much better. It was absolutely awesome to see the realâtime data from our tests. Up until now, we were just guessing in the dark.â
Gallagher and his teammates spend 10 to 20 hours weekly throughout the year perfecting their entry for the Baja, a threeâtimesâaâyear gauntlet sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers that draws upward of 120 teams from universities worldwide. Each teamâs openâ wheel buggy must survive both a fourâhour endurance race over extreme terrain and the scrutiny of SAE judges who spend days pouring over the preparations and innovations that go into design, build, test and promotion phases.
Thanks to the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) work they were able to accomplish after borrowing ITMâs cDAQ44 and accompanying iTestSystem application, the RedHawk team is confident this yearâs racer will fare far better than last yearâs, which suffered a cracked frame at one competition and complete shearâ off at another. It is an edge they think will not just improve performance but also wow the judges with the engineering science behind their prototype.
âIâve never read of any other team actually able to do this type of dynamic logging of strain data,â said Gallagher, who is hoping for a topâ10 finish. âThe judges always make a point of asking what new things you have done to better your design. This will give us major brownie points.â
For ITM, Miamiâs tests presented yet another scenario to illustrate the capabilities of their cDAQâ44 unit and iTS software, both of which proved adept as the students put their car through its vigorous paces. Additional tests included a downâtheâstairs run and highâspeed curb jumps â all while logging continuous load data.
The customâmade unit and software application allow users to take up to an eightâ hour snapshot of a vehicle during operation and gather load, temperature and accelerometer measurements, and without tapping into the vehicleâs power source.
âWe developed the cDAQâ44 to be a nice industrial rugged package,â said ITM Engineer Ryan Welker. âWith this unit, a laptop and our software, you can mount it to a vehicle real quickly, and if you are within standard wireless range, begin pulling data right away without hooking up any cords to your computer. Plus, we can use environmental connectors that are dust and water tight so you can run it down the road or right through the mud.â
Welker was thrilled with the firmâs interaction with the Miami Baja team. Not only did it give them a chance to help area students in the field, but it also demonstrated the ease of use of the firmâs proprietary software.
âWe turned over our iTestSystem software to students who had never used it before, and after a general introduction and brief explanation, they were off and running and able to use it with success,â he said. âThey never called with any problems.â
